Donald Deskey
American [1894-1989]
Donald Deskey was one of American Modern designs most famous names. He was one of the pioneers alongside Paul Frankl who established the American Art Deco 'streamlined modern' style. He designed apartments for for high society such as the Rockefeller's, but his most notable commission was the Palace of American Art Deco at Radio City Music Hall. The most desirable furniture designed by Deskey dates back to the 20's and 30's and is minimalist, geometric, and abstract with repeating angles and clean lines. Not unlike other notable Art Deco designers, he loved to work with chrome, aluminum, and Bakelite, innovative materials that could be used because of the advances in technology at the time. Deskey had his own furniture company Deskey-Vollmer for which he designed a limited amount of pieces.
The majority of Deskey's custom commissions were executed by the Company of Mastercraftsmen and Schmieg & Kotzian. Deskey also designed for Treitel-Gratz Co., AMODEC, Hastings Table Co., and Widdicomb Furniture Company of Grand Rapids.
