Long Island City - New York [1920-1965]
Catalin + Plaskon FADA Radio & Electric Company radios were popular in the 1930's and 1940's, and their designs gave wide exposure to the potential of plastics. The letters F.A.D.A. are the initials of Frank Angelo D'Andrea, founder of FADA Radio Corp.
FADA produced many radios and televisions over the years, but its brightly colored Catalin radios, particularly the Model 1000, popularly known as "The Bullet", is the best-known. The "Bullet" was first introduced in 1940 as a 115 model. Unfortunately, the names of the designers of this iconic design remains unknown. It was during the 1940s that the most enduring FADA plastic radio designs were made and marketed. The brightly colored Catalin and Plaskon "Fada Coloradios" streamlined designs became part of the history of what is referred to as the "Golden Age of Radio," during the 1940s. The Catalin FADA radios made prewar are often referred to as the "early" models.
Other Catalin models manufactured by FADA that are well known + sought after by radio collectors because of their fabulous Deco designs include: "Bullet" models 115, 116, 189 "All-American" + 200 Series which was also made as an "All-American" with blue bezel, blue cabinet "All-American" with red handle + knobs must have a 189 sticker, the L-56/ L-26 / 136 / 149 / 202 / SW157 + 188 and 202 as "All-American" model(recommended to have sticker for all color combos except possibly the blue handle + knobs version), F55 / 52/ F44, 5F60 / 21, 5F50 / 53, 652 / 252 / 659 "Temple", 700 "Cloud", and the 711 "Dip-Top".
The FADA "Bullet" model was made in three different cabinet/trim variations: standard grill slit cut-outs, open-face, and insert grill. The open-face + inset grill models were made in the factory when the slits on the grill were damaged during the molding process. FADA workers just cut out the damaged grill section in order to save a cabinet and have a radio that was salable. The open-face is sought to be a transitional model to the insert grill with very few made.

Beautiful prewar Fada model 53 / 5F50 Catalin radio in marbleized butterscotch with a bright green grill insert. Wonderful Art Deco model made in 1938 by FADA Radio + Electric Company has a beautiful design and size. This yellow and bright green example is all original and in great condition with a beautiful glossy finish. Green grill makes for a wonderful contrast with the butterscotch cabinet. The faintly marbleized cabinet is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips or repairs; it does have a minor tube burn that blends with cabinet coloration. The bright green catalin insert grill is also free of cracks, chips or repairs. Clear dial plastic cover and water slide decal are correct replacements. Fada 711 'Dip-Top' Catalin Radio Lapis Lazuli Blue + White
Perfect + Rare Bright Blue Dip-Top Catalin Radio From 1946
Rare and desirable lapis-lazuli blue 1946 Fada 711 "Dip-Top" Catalin radio - the last of the Catalin models made by Fada Radio. The Catalin case has spectacular marbleizing and has been cut/polished back to its original color of bright lapis-lazuli blue. This radio has no chips, cracks, tube burns or repairs to the catalin case. The ivory marbled knobs + handle are original and also free f any damage. The bright and colorful Fada sunburst dial face is also in great original condition with only slight wear. This Art Deco catalin model made in 1939 by FADA Radio + Electric Company has a beautiful design and size. This seldom seen green + butterscotch catalin example is a beautiful example with great swirls and vibrance. The vibrant emerald green cabinet is beautifully marbleized with yellow, darker and lighter green veins. The vibrant green catalin cabinet is free of chips, tube burns or repairs; however it does have a hairline crack on the top left corner radiating from grill opening and a burn(reddish color-not from tube) on the left side rear. The original emerald green handle is lighter on the backside(see photos). These small defects in no way take away from the beauty and rarity of this radio. Seldom seen FADA Model 116 Pre-War 'Euro Bullet' Catalin Streamliner in beautiful marbleized translucent Onyx Green with Yellow marbleized trim. This radio's styling epitomizes 1940’s Streamline Art Deco design. Its sleek, rounded lines suggest speed and practicality, hallmarks of streamlined industrial design from those years. The original marbleized yellow trim adds contrast and style to this stunning example of a seldom found FADA 116 Euro Bullet model. The model 116 is the export European version of the pre-war Fada 115. The model 116 ‘Euro-Bullet' differs from the similar looking model 115, in that it has a slightly different dial with shortwave/broadcast bands with a selection switch on back and radio is 220V chassis. The warm onyx green patina on the cabinet is highlighted by some orange, clear + yellow marbleizing and a beautiful transparency. The highly transparent yellow trim adds contrast and style to this stunning example of a FADA Bullet Streamliner model. The cabinet on this onyx and yellow FADA 115 has no cracks, chips, tube burns or repairs. The yellow catalin dial ring, gumdrop knobs and handle are original + correct to the radio and also in great condition with no cracks, chips, breaks, or repairs. This Art Deco model made in 1938 by FADA Radio + Electric Company has a beautiful design and size. The vibrant emerald green cabinet is beautifully marbleized with yellow, darker and lighter green veins. The vibrant green catalin cabinet is free of chips, tube burns or repairs; however it does have three small hairline cracks, Two of the hairlines are located on the bottom of the cabinet and can not bee seen when displayed, the third one is coming off the bottom left corner of the grill opening and is difficult to see as it blends nicely with the deep green color and swirls and is smooth. These small defects in no way take away from the beauty and rarity of this radio. The marbleized yellow insert grill and fluted knobs are original to the radio and have no damage. Radio retains the original manufacturers sticker affixed to the bottom with the "GA" designation for green + alabaster. Clear dial plastic cover and water-slide decal are correct replacements. This is one of the earliest Catalin radio models made 1936/37 which has a simple and distinct cabinet design. This yellow + onyx example is in great condition with a beautiful glossy finish. This model has come to be known to collectors as the 'Baby Fada' because of its small size. The AU designation at the end of the model # is the color code for Alabaster + Onyx per FADA catalogs of the era. The cabinet is in excellent condition with no cracks, chips, tube burns or repairs. The marbleized blue catalin insert grill is also free of cracks, chips or repairs. Clear dial plastic cover and water slide decal are correct replacements. This beautiful FADA has been well taken care of and has very few small scratches consistent with light use. FADA 'Bullet' Radio Catalin Streamliner Model 1000 in all translucent Onyx green. This radio styling epitomizes 1940's Streamline design with its sleek rounded lines that suggest speed and practicality, hallmarks of streamlined industrial design from those years. FADA produced many radios and televisions over the years, but its Catalin radios, particularly the "Bullet" are the best-known models. This radio is as clean as one can be found and would truly make a great addition to any radio or Deco collection. The beautiful onyx green catalin cabinet and trim has orange, clear + light yellow marbleizing and a beautiful transparency. This onyx FADA 1000 has no cracks, chips, tube burns or repairs. Catalin matching onyx green dial ring, fluted knobs and handle are original to the radio and in perfect condition with no cracks, chips, breaks, burns or repairs. The beautiful Art Deco gold 'Gemloid' dial face is bright and has no paint wear. Radio retains the original cardboard back panel and gold grill cloth. The dial plastic cover is a correct replacement. Rare Insert Grill FADA 652 'Temple' Catalin radio in a beautiful stunning blue + butterscotch with incredible marbleizing. The insert grill models rarely show up and are even harder to find in blue...the best color. The green patina this radio has taken on is beautiful - radio has only been lightly polished to a high gloss. The green(blue) colored cabinet has veins of yellow with tones of blue running through it that makes this an incredible example. The yellow grille, knobs and dial bezel adds contrast and style to this stunning example of a FADA Temple model. The model 652 was part of the 1940-1942 radio lineup. This rare blue and yellow FADA 652 is in wonderful condition with no chips, repairs or tube burns. Cabinet does have three very small tight hairlines coming off the corners of the insert grill opening, this is a common occurrence on the rarer insert grill models (difficult to photograph and see in person and when displayed). The original yellow catalin louvered insert grill has one small hairline that is only visible when radio is tilted back; see last photo. Yellow dial surround and gum-drop knobs are original and in perfect condition with no cracks, chips or repairs. Reverse painted dial glass is an exact replacement for the original one, which often is damaged on this model. Radio retains the original cardboard back panel.
