Rare Art Deco Catalin Tom Thumb Radio
Tom Thumb Bright Red Catalin radio made in the late 1930s by the Automatic Radio Mfg. Co. The model 955 is known to collectors as the 'Oval-Dial' or 'Non-Deco'. The Tom Thumb name is a perfect fit for this radio - as it is one of the smallest radios made of catalin. This model has a design that is unique with attached catalin feet, an oval-shaped dial face, deco grill cutouts, and vertically positioned knobs. bright red cabinet is highlighted by beautiful yellow marbleizing. Catalin cabinet has tube burns or repairs; however it does have a few tight hairlines and one chip onthe back right top corner as seen in the images. The original catalin knobs have nice marbleizing and no damage. The two perfect catalin feet have the original red painted stripes. Water-slide decal, dial plastic + gold grill cloth are correct replacements. This is a beautiful example of an all original early + rare Tom Thumb catalin radio. Air King 52 Radio 'Skyscraper' Brown with Egyptians - Harold Van Doren
Striking American Art Deco Air King Radio Design
This striking brown Air King 'Skyscraper' Model 52 radio with the Egyptian insert is a true American Art Deco icon. John Sideli in his book "Classic Plastic Radios of the 30's and 40's" called it "one of the most important plastic radios ever made". This marbleized chocolate brown Bakelite Air King Model 52 was designed by Harold Van Doren + John Gordon Rideout for the Air King Products Company of New York in 1933. This early model radio constructed of bakelite, has the rarer Egyptian insert on its waterfall facade and the large deco 'AK" tuning knob. The fragile nature of the Air King radios has made them extremely rare + desirable. Radio is all-original and in fabulous condition with no cracks, chips, or repairs. The Deco gold-tone Egyptian insert is original and in great condition with only slight signs of age. The large brown bakelite 'AK' knob + the two brown top bars are original to the radio and perfect. The two brown lever knobs are exact replacements. Radio retains the original grill cloth and metal bottom panel. Designed in 1946, this radio is comprised of 3 separate catalin pieces setting it apart from other radios of the time. he front of the cabinet is consists of two colors, the yellow insert grille and the green surround, both cast separately which are fastened to the yellow cabinet. It is believed that the front surround + the large attached grill are among the largest cast catalin parts ever made. The faintly marbleized yellow catalin cabinet is contrasted with the heavily marbleized jade green trim. Motorola 52 'Vertical Grill' catalin radio in beautiful marbleized green with yellow trim is the first in a series of three different Catalin cabinet radios produced by Motorola. Manufactured in 1939 by Motorola Radio also known to collectors as the 'Vertical Grill'. This Motorola design highlights the Art Deco elements of the era. The green on this example is highlighted by swirls of light yellow, brown and clear to add depth to the color. This beautiful radio would make a fantastic addition to a collection. The details in the design are unique with its vertically louvered grill, which, feathers out from the center to the left + right and hexagonal knobs make for an unusual design and highly sought after radio. The cabinet features streamlined hand incised grooves that stretch around the case bringing all the elements together while adding to the geometric aspect of the radio. This deco radio is one model in the line of Fada's streamlined 'Coloradios' and was offered in a choice of four color combinations with red being the most sought after. This cabinet's design is a beautiful example of Machine Age styling. The radio's curved and angular front + side details of varying thickness with strong horizontal lines are reminiscent of the Art Deco architecture of the period. This radio is exceedingly hard to find and is highly sought after by both radio and Art Deco collectors.
